Mount Everest More Cyclones/Storms

There has been an increase in cyclones and associated storms and heavy snow for Everest in May. There were two major cyclones in 2021 and one Super Cyclone in 2020. Is this a trend to we can expect for the future?

In years past the strongest cyclones and associated storms, Tropical Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal, occurred in the October to November months. However, recent extensive research of weather data shows an increase in cyclones in the March to May timeframe. For expedition groups and others climbing Mount Everest that is not good news. These cyclones coming out of the Bay of Bengal tend to bring heavy snow and strong winds when they get close to Mount Everest.

Why the increase in storms in the spring. One big reason is the warming of the Indian Ocean and other major oceans and most experts say this will continue.

What will the 2022 spring climbing season bring? Too early to tell now but we will monitor this so stay tuned.
